Would you like to keep all your clothes like Shirts,
T-Shirts, Trousers, Socks, etc. in a single
compartment of a cupboard or separately put them
in a compartment? That’s what partitioning the
hard-disk of computer helps one to do- keeping our
data like files, music, video, etc. in a different
partition. Also, partitioning helps if one wants to
install two Operating Systems on the computer for
dual-booting purposes. While it’s advisable to
partition while installing the OS, but what if you
want to do it after installation? Fret not, follow
these simple instructions on Windows OS (works
for Windows XP/Vista/7 and 8) to create partitions
in your hard-disk:

1. Take back-up of your data, though
partitioning doesn’t harm the data, but one
shouldn’t take risk with their precious data.
2. Now, we’ve to open ‘Disk Management’
application on the computer, there are two
ways for finding it-
Right click ‘Computer’ icon and click ‘Manage’
Option. You’ll be presented with various
options to manage computer and you’ve to
open ‘Disk Management’.
Open ‘Control Panel’ and go to ‘System and
Security’ option to see options to adjust system
settings. In the administrative tools, you’ll be
able to see option to ‘Create and format hard
disk partitions’
3. The disk management application will show
you all the status of the hard disk and its
partitions in a graphical as well as detailed
manner.
4. For creating a partition, choose a disk which
have free space. Right-click the disk and select
‘Shrink Volume’. (Please Note: Try this option
on basic disks, because shrinking dynamic
disks may lead to loss of data.)
5. Now, you can write the amount by which you
want to shrink the disk.
6. Now, you can see a new unallocated space
created in the disk management application.
Right clicking on this space will open a
wizard to guide you through the process of
creating a new partition. It is recommended
to format the partition as NTFS File System.
So these were some easy steps for making
partitions in Windows. Now you’ve a new partition
which you can use for having data, use it for back-
up purposes or install a second OS for dual-boot
